Audio Hardware Applications Engineer (Santa Clara, CA)

Job Summary:

xMEMS is Reinventing Sound with the world’s first monolithic MEMS microspeakers for consumer audio devices. This is a unique opportunity to help lead the transition in sound production from century-old coil- based speakers to solid state MEMS.

This is an entirely new transduction mechanism with unique, never-before-seen characteristics. As the Audio Hardware Applications Engineer you will be architecting reference designs, writing technical collateral, supporting and training field teams and assisting the world’s leading consumer electronics OEMs with the successful commercial launch of personal audio devices using xMEMS microspeakers.

This position requires familiarity with the full audio signal chain, especially audio amplifiers. This is an opportunity to join an elite system engineering team of mechanical, DSP and acoustic engineers.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct engineering support for xMEMS customers and field personnel
  • Development of technical collateral including datasheets, application notes, and technical articles
  • Design, develop and debug cost effective HW reference design and demonstration platforms for high performance personal audio subsystems
  • Design schematics and layout of Printed Circuit Boards HW
  • Conducting technical training for field personnel and customers on product or application specific topics
  • Guiding customers through system testing, debugging, failure analysis, and troubleshooting
  • Collaborate and communicate closely with IC Design engineers and Systems engineers to understand and define design requirements and customer use cases.
  • Contribute to next-generation audio product definition
Qualifications:
  • BS Electrical Engineering; MS preferred
  • 7+ years experience in the semiconductor industry with mixed-signal audio amplifier, power or related background
  • Must have experience in a customer-facing role with strong verbal & written communication skills
  • Lab experience using spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, logic analyzers, etc.
  • Experience in component selection, schematic entry, and knowledge of PCB layout design.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with Mechanical engineers, DSP engineers, Acoustic engineers and 3rd parties including end-customers and/or ODM/CM partners.
  • Outstanding technical problem solver, with ability to scope out, plan, and lead others to investigate and solve challenging problems
  • Comfortable with reading and writing detailed technical specifications
  • Tier 1 customer support experience is a plus

Acoustic Engineer (Santa Clara, CA)

Job Summary:

xMEMS is Reinventing Sound with the world’s first monolithic MEMS microspeakers for consumer audio devices. This is a unique opportunity to help lead the transition in sound production from century-old coil- based speakers to solid state MEMS.

This is an entirely new transduction mechanism with unique, never-before-seen characteristics. As the Acoustic Engineer you will be performing design and analysis to support the development of personal audio system prototypes and design guidelines that the world’s leading consumer electronics OEMs will use to define their products that use xMEMS microspeakers.

This position leads all phases from concept to system prototype design. Assignments are broad in nature, requiring appreciable initiative, originality, ingenuity, and strong problem-solving skills. The ideal candidate will have excellent analysis skills, advanced acoustic engineering experience, and a good understanding of consumer earbud design. This is an opportunity to join an elite systems engineering team of mechanical, DSP and electrical engineers.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Investigate and develop acoustic system design concepts to achieve microspeaker and overall system product performance requirements (frequency response, THD, idle noise, gain before feedback, etc.)
  • Use simulation tools to predict acoustic system behavior
  • Define, build, and characterize physical prototypes of acoustic systems
  • Work directly with DSP and mechanical engineers to tune and optimize system performance
  • Create engineering documentation to support the definition, design, and performance of personal audio products and technologies with MEMS microspeakers.
  • Collaborate with microspeaker R&D to apply system acoustic requirements into next-generation xMEMS products
Qualifications:
  • BS required in Acoustical, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, MS preferred
  • 7+ years of direct acoustic design experience of wearable audio products
  • 3+ years of hands-on acoustic test experience
  • Solid understanding of headphone acoustic structures and enclosure/porting design
  • Experience with either active noise cancellation, spatial audio, or hearing assistance technologies is highly desirable
  • Solid understanding of acoustic test, measurement systems and techniques
  • Experience using acoustic test equipment from B&K, GRAS, Audio Precision, Listen Inc. (SoundCheck), and others
  • Experience specifying requirements for acoustic component including drivers, microphones, and acoustic meshes
  • Basic understanding of transducer design, lumped parameter models, micro drivers, and microphones
  • Proficient in acoustic modeling with PSpice, COMSOL or other similar tools
  • Proficient using Matlab for data analysis and visualization
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with Mechanical/Electrical engineers, DSP engineers, and 3rd parties including end-customers and/or ODM/CM partners.
  • Outstanding technical problem solver, with ability to scope out, plan, and lead others to investigate and solve challenging problems
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills
  • Comfortable with reading and writing detailed technical specifications
  • Ability to adapt to constantly evolving constraints and requirements, while maintaining the highest performance standards
  • Knowledge of psychoacoustics and sound quality evaluation
  • Critical Listening skills with a passion for music and audio
